Largest global Hydrogen projects

Read on and discover some of the most interesting global Hydrogen projects:

UK: Iberdrola hydrogen

Iberdrola will build a facility in Felixstowe, the United Kingdom’s largest port, to supply green hydrogen to vehicles and machinery. Felixstowe is located in southeast England, close to several of Iberdrola’s North Sea wind farms. The project’s first phase, set to begin operations in 2026, will have the capacity to produce 14,000 tons of hydrogen per year via electrolyzers, with the capacity potentially being doubled in the future.

Iberdrola will invest GBP 150 million (€170 million) in the project, which will be completed in 2026. The company has already completed the 714 MW East Anglia ONE project and intends to construct the East Anglia offshore wind complex, which will bring two additional projects with a total capacity of 2.9 GW to the area.

In total, the Iberdrola group is working on more than 60 green hydrogen projects in eight different countries. It claims that its green hydrogen portfolio will have a total production capacity of 400,000 tons per year by 2030, requiring a €9 billion investment.

Spain: HyDeal Ambition

HyDeal Espana (PlatformCo Hidrogeno) is the first industrial HyDeal Ambition platform implementation. HyDeal Espana will manage the development, funding, and construction of green hydrogen production and transmission infrastructures after being officially incorporated as an industrial joint venture on January 10th, 2022, following a one-year feasibility study. HyDeal Espana will supply an industrial complex in Asturias at a price competitive with fossil fuels from facilities in Northern Spain. Production will begin in 2025, with a total installed capacity of 9.5 GW of solar power and 7.4 GW of electrolyzers reaching 9.5 GW by 2030.

HyDeal Espana will enable the production of green steel, green fertilizers, and other zero-carbon industrial and energy products, establishing its sponsor companies as European market leaders. Spain’s green energy transformation has reached a tipping point, bringing about industrial revival and sustainable jobs in collaboration with local communities, fulfilling its government’s ambitions to make the country a global pioneer in accordance with Europe’s Fit for 55 agenda.

Australia: Western Green Energy Hub (WGEH)

The Western Green Energy Hub (WGEH) is one of the world’s largest green energy projects. InterContinental Energy intends to construct a 50 GW renewable energy hub in Western Australia dedicated to green hydrogen production by 2030.

Brendan Hammond, chairman of the board of the Western Green Energy Hub (WGEH) and a senior executive at InterContinental, believes the massive project should be viewed in the context of a $2.5 trillion global renewable hydrogen market by 2050.

“At full scale, with the entire land area up and running, we believe it will be approximately 50 GW and that will comprise 30 GW wind and 20 GW solar,” Hammond said, speaking in an interview.

Based on the development of world-scale renewable power generation, AREH intends to supply renewable power to local customers in the world’s largest mining region, as well as produce green hydrogen and green ammonia for the domestic Australian market and export to major international users. At full capacity, AREH will be able to produce approximately 1.6 million tonnes of green hydrogen or 9 million tonnes of green ammonia per year.

An important ESG consideration for the project is a focus not just on environmental concerns but also ensuring respect for indigenous culture and participation of First Nations Peoples.  Intercontinental has partnered with Mirning Green Energy Limited as part of the WGEH consortium, ensuring that Mirning Traditional Owners will significantly benefit from the project.

Oman: Green Energy Hub GEO

Shell Oman has signed a Letter of Intent with the Ministry of Energy and Minerals in Oman to investigate the deployment of Liquified Synthetic Gas (LSG). LSG is created when green hydrogen is combined with carbon dioxide to produce natural gas, which is then liquefied. Green Energy Oman (GEO) is one of the world’s most promising clean fuels hubs, with the potential to be a pioneering project in this sector, supplying the world with green fuels in a decarbonized economy.

In addition, Oman LNG LLC and Shell International Trading Middle East FZE announced the signing of a term sheet for the purchase of 0.8 million tons per annum (mtpa) of Liquefied Natural Gas from Oman LNG over 10 years beginning in 2025. This milestone in Oman LNG’s history complements the company’s efforts to extend its contracts beyond 2024, with a strong interest in leveraging partnerships with various firms around the world.

Hamed Al Nu’amani, CEO of Oman LNG, said: “We are delighted to sign this term-sheet agreement with Shell, who has been our partner in the industry for many years. This agreement leverages the opportunities to place Oman LNG in a very competitive market, with strong partners allowing us to grow our market access.”

In addition, after acquiring a 35% stake in the Green Energy Oman (GEO) project, OQ and Shell International signed a Partnership Agreement for the Development of Green Hydrogen in Oman. The project is expected to be developed in phases in order to produce approximately 1.8 million tonnes of green hydrogen at full capacity.

Japan: Fukushima Hydrogen Energy Research Field (FH2R)

Japan has been actively researching hydrogen production since 1974 when it established the “Sunshine Project,” and fuel cell technology research and development since 1978, when it established the “Moonlight Project.”

A 20MW solar PV power project, Fukushima Hydrogen Energy Research Field Solar PV Park. It is situated in Japan’s Fukushima. The project is still in progress. It has only undergone one phase of development. FH2R uses 20MW of solar power generation facilities on a 180,000m2 site, along with grid power, to conduct water electrolysis in the world’s largest renewable energy-powered 10MW-class hydrogen production unit. It can produce, store, and supply up to 1,200 Nm3 of hydrogen per hour (rated power operation).

Toshiba has acted as the project’s lead engineering and EPC partner and to date has learned valuable lessons from FH2R, adapting the technology used to help to establish business models both for hydrogen utilization, and for demand-based production, especially regarding controls for balancing Hydrogen production with the output from the solar photovoltaic plat.

US: Hy Stor Energy

In order to promote the GH2 Green Hydrogen Standard across North America and the rest of the world, Hy Stor Energy LP (Hy Stor Energy), a company that is leading the way in Mississippi with renewably produced green hydrogen and energy storage at scale, has partnered with the Green Hydrogen Organisation (GH2). The GH2 standard, which was launched in 2022 validates projects using 100% or nearly 100% renewable energy with almost zero greenhouse gas emissions, to minimise any confusion between clean Hydrogen production, and Hydrogen produced with the use of fossil fuels.   Hy Stor Energy will produce hydrogen for its eagerly anticipated Mississippi Clean Hydrogen Hub and any future projects.

Since most projects, like Hy Stor Energy’s Mississippi Clean Hydrogen Hub, are still in the early design stages, the project will be independently evaluated using standards to identify any problems or worries that could act as a barrier to accreditation.
